Played a works golf tournament at Westerhope yesterday. both my playing partners had gps devices which hung on their bags. This is the fiirst time I have seen them used and must say im very impressed. There was no fiddling about with buttons etc and the device just kept updating with yardage to a set hazard ie bunker from the tee, and then yardage to front, centre and rear of green for all approach shots. My first question is are they legal for our comps? and secondly what are peoples opinions?
From the 36 holes I played I would say they definately speed up play (a major problem on our course). No more walking up and down looking for sprinkler heads. I know that you still have to hit the shot but I found increased confidence in knowing that the club in my hand, was the correct one. This is especially effective when cutting out doglegs on approaches ie our 14th hole.

For what its worth I played with an ex captain of TGC last week and he had one of these devices .......... I feel the psycological impact of realising that you can't hit the ball consistantly the same distance with the same club one hole after an other makes these as dangerous and demoralising a device as I have ever seen on a golf course.

these gps devices and bushnells are only good for those who can afford them. why not just give everyone a helping hand by putting in 100yd and 200yd markers as well and re measure the old 150yd markers. this would help all members and make a visitors life a lot easier

Disco makes a very good point about the affordability of GPS devices. Improved and additional distance markers would be very much appreciated by our members and visitors alike. It has helped my game when playing other courses with better distance markers and it would keep our course up there with the best of them. The course has been well managed over the summer and this would in my opinion be a further improvement. ;D

I would like to add my support to the idea of exploring the idea of having 100/150/200 yds(mts?) distance markers placed on the holes. Personally I find the present 150 yds fairway discs do the job .... need little maintenance I guess , don't slow down grass cutting , don't seem to get damaged ....I don,t know how much they cost ? Sounds like one for the greens committe and Tim to me ?
