TYNEMOUTH JUNIORS CROWNED COUNTY CHAMPIONS
Tynemouth junior golfers have won the Northumberland County Junior League Championship for the second time in 4 years.
Having dominated their division during the league season they progressed to the playoffs with a comprehensive 12-0 win against Bedlington last weekend. The team travelled to Stocksfield Golf Club on Sunday for the end of season playoff finals day.
The team of Captain Paul Westphal, Ben Parfitt, Daniel Chambers, Marcus Crowe, Adam Nicholson and Kelly McNulty were drawn against Longhirst in the morning semi final. An all round team effort with lead out player Ben setting the pace, 8 and 6 winner, followed up by wins from Marcus, Adam and Kelly saw the talented youngsters triumph 9 – 3 and progress to the final where they would face reigning champions Hexham.
Once again Ben led the way playing some excellent golf and triumphed 4 and 3 to gain Tynemouth their first 2 crucial points of the 7 required to win. Daniel Chambers made amends for a frustrating loss in morning by adding a further 2 points with another great 4 and 3 win. With the all the remaining games out on the course very close, the match was far from over and all was still to play for. Paul Westphal produced a Captains performance, finding himself at 1 down on the 16th tee he turned round the deficit and triumphed on the 18th for another 2 crucial points. Tynemouth now only required 1 point from the remaining 3 games, Adam salvaged a half on the 18th and young star of the future Kelly McNulty who had won easily 5 and 4 in the morning, recorded another win to secure a great 9-3 result for Tynemouth.
All 6 players contributed to the team effort during what was a very competitive 36 holes of golf and were deservedly crowned County Champions. Many Congratulations to the team, their fellow junior team member caddies, and all the other junior golfers who had represented the club during the season in league matches. It was difficult decision to select the team of 6 for the finals from the amount of junior golf talent available at Tynemouth.
The win was even more pleasing for Club Captain Will Smith who has been the clubs junior golf organiser for many years and has seen all the current team from the day the hit their first shots with 36 handicaps grow into the very competitive, single figure golfers, of today.
Captain Will said the result was "absolutely fantastic and especially in his year as Tynemouth Club Captain". He is "very proud of the team and all the junior section who are a credit to the Club".
